Made a trip to Sephora yesterday and found a couple of pretty cool new things! One of them is the caviar manicure by Ciate, a new way to create pretty patterned nails easily.

This is the caviar manicure kit that I got from Sephora… And here’s how to do it.

Step 1: Apply base coat and colour. You’ll need 2 thick coats in order to complete the next step.

Step 2: Sprinkle the micro pearls gently all over each nail. Press down firmly to set.

Step 3: Apply top coat to only the edge of the nails to seal it in. Wait 15-20 minutes to dry and your pretty nails are all set for your party!

Certainly a lot more work than nail stickers, but that’s the fun.

Enjoy your new lovely nails! =X

I frequently have patients ask me all sorts of questions about Botox jaw reduction. Here’s a summary of what you might really want to know about it.

Will my skin sag after non-surgical jaw reduction by Botox?

No. The difference in jaw slimming is visible but not so great as to cause excess skin, such that it sags. As mentioned, it’s a natural looking effect, unlike surgical jaw reduction where people will most likely be able to tell.

When I do non-surgical jaw reduction by Botox, will I become addicted to the procedure?

Only if you’re addicted to looking better than before. The procedure itself does not produce any form of dependence or tolerance to it. If you are satisfied with the results or decide not to continue with it, you do not have to repeat the procedure any more than you so wish.

Does the effect of non-surgical jaw reduction by Botox become permanent after a while?

This is a question that is still under major debate. Some believe that with prolonged weakening and atrophy of the masseter muscles, it becomes difficult to build it up again, so that the effect becomes more permanent. There may even be bone remodelling of the jaw due to changes in muscle action on the angles of the jaw. However, this effect is at best variable and uncertain. If you are keen to upkeep your beautiful V-shape face, it is still a good idea to maintain it with sufficient doses at regular intervals, depending on your doctor’s prescription.

I did the non-surgical jaw reduction by Botox. Why do I not see the result?

If you do not see the results from your recent non-surgical jaw reduction by Botox, here’s a checklist to find out why:

Was it a reliable treatment? This may seem rather common sense, but it is important to know that your treating personnel is licensed and trained to perform this procedure, as well as use approved brands of botulinum toxin. At the date of this article, 2 brands of botulinum toxin: Botox and Dysport, are FDA (USA) and HSA (Singapore) approved. No spa or beautician should be doing this procedure for you.

Has it been 2 months since your non-surgical jaw reduction by Botox? Results are not instantaneous. It takes an average of 2-8 weeks to see good results.

Was the dose of botulinum toxin enough? Low doses effect small changes, so that you are unable to tell the difference. Perhaps you need to check how much botulinum toxin was used and whether you need a top up.

Is the reason for treatment correct? There are 4 reasons to not having a slim face: big bone, fat under the skin, buccal fat pad on the cheeks and masseter muscles at the angles of the jaws. Non-surgical jaw reduction by Botox only resolves the last one. You need other procedures to treat the other 3 causes. Occasionally, it is more than one reason. The doctor can tell you which is your real problem and recommend accordingly.

Do you have antibodies to the botulinum toxin? This is very rare but possible. If you have antibodies to the botulinum toxin, the injected Botox will have been removed by the body and rendered ineffective at the point of injection. In that case, consider other forms of treatments.

People frequently ask me what is the difference between IPLs and Lasers. It is confusing, I agree.

Intense pulsed light is a technology similar to medical lasers, except that it uses a selective broad spectrum of intense light to target melanin in hair and pigmented lesions, haemoglobin in vascular lesions and porphyrin molecules associated with P acnes bacteria. It is a safe and effective non-surgical treatment option for permanent hair reduction and pigmented or vascular lesions, with little or no downtime. You can literally return to your activities immediately after treatment.

Our clinic’s Nannolight IPL just arrived last week! It’s FDA and HSA approved for those indications. This IPL has contact cooling so that the entire procedure is comfortable and almost pain-free. Flashes of intense light is applied over the target area to be treated and is commonly described to feel like rubber bands snapping over the skin.

Multiple treatments are required for optimal results. Hair removal takes approximately 4-10 treatments and pigmented or vascular lesions take approximately 4-5 treatments. Treatments can be spaced 1 month apart.

It is important to consult with your doctor before the procedure, as the settings of treatment vary with each individual, in order to minimise side effects. Improper use of the IPL can lead to burns, post treatment pigmentation or even scarring. These can be avoided with careful selection of treatment parameters and patient profile.

Are you looking to get rid of the unsightly, unwanted hair? Seeking to reduce those bothersome pigmentation and vascularity? Ask your aesthetic doctor now for what you can do to treat these!

For more information, you can also check out my clinic website at http://www.tiffinyyangclinic.com.

One good thing about having my own practice is that I get to incorporate into my practice the things I believe in and that I know, works.

Choosing a skincare line for my clinic was a very difficult decision. There are so many brands of skincare products out there, claiming to accomplish all sorts of miracles. The truth is, nobody can create miracles. If it does seem miraculous, it probably contains too much steroids, or worse still– hydroquinone. I am also pretty skeptical because of the countless OTC products I have tried for ages without so much as seeing a twitch.

A good and safe skincare line just needs to be well-rounded, effective, cost-efficient and minimally irritating.

I explored my options and discovered the Jan Marini line of skincare products. Had the opportunity to try them out myself, in particular the C-esta series and the MD series. Pleasantly met with good results.

Take the C-esta series, for example. After pregnancy, I felt my face sagged slightly and even felt a bit lax. :’( The change wasn’t visible, but I definitely knew it was real. I decided to give this product a try. The series mainly contains DMAE complex for lifting and Vitamin C for whitening. Use the C-esta cleansing gel first, followed by C-esta Oil Control Serum. Add on a moisturiser after that if you’d like. With no exaggeration intended, I felt my face lift within days, my complexion started to glow and my face looked even slimmer than before (probably from some slight tightening– I wasn’t joking about the saggy skin!). I was almost shocked at how effective the product was. My hubby also noticed and admired. It also seemed to be 2 tones lighter than the untreated neck and chest.

The only “downside” is that the effect probably lasts only as long as you use it. My suggestion is that you can combine it with a skin tightening laser procedure for maximum benefit.

The Age Intervention Dark Circle Eye Defense cream is also one of their bestsellers. It contains retinol, peptides, chrysin, etc. to rapidly improve dark eye circles and was clinically proven in independent studies, where 100% of subjects observed improvement in texture, lines, wrinkles and pigment around the eyes by dermatological assessment. I tried it at a period when I was sleeping very little since I was preparing the clinic and looking after my little one. Instead of worsening dark eye circles, they definitely improved. Ha! Probably will improve the success rate of my laser treatments for dark eye circles to near 90%.

Feedback from my clients who are on Retinol MD or Enlighten MD: their skin felt smoother within a week, complexion started to glow and fine lines improved later on. No wonder this brand won the NewBeauty Award for the best product (in particular, the Retinol MD) 3 years in a row (2011 to 2013).

Note of warning though: the MD series has stronger levels of active ingredients and therefore, is only available at the doctor’s office and must be used according to careful instructions. Otherwise, side effects will not be a surprise.

I’m sure Jan Marini is not the only good skincare brand around and I certainly wouldn’t say it is necessarily the best. But it isn’t easy to find a decent skincare line and this is certainly a pretty darn good one. In conclusion, once you do sufficient research and trial and error, the rewards will surely be great! For your skin, at least.

———————————————————————————————————

A friend and I went to eat at BBQ Box, Geylang, 2 weeks ago. It was a Northen Chinese type of BBQ cuisine… super spicy and salty, but super addictive. Not too healthy dining, I must say!

The delicious BBQ chicken wings, BBQ mushrooms (my favorite!), BBQ beef and lamb, BBQ fish and prawn. All very spicy, all very yummy.

The dish on the left explains the saying “as cool as a cucumber”. This garlicky cucumber cools the tongue from the burning spices of the BBQ food, like ice on a hot iron. Loved the eggplant too.

Unfortunately, like they always say about Geylang food… can you take it? My tummy started feeling queasy that very night and I was sick the very next day (nausea, diarrhoea, the works…). Sigh! Maybe it was the mushrooms– overloaded on that.

Makes me quite afraid to go back there again.

Anyway, look who’s here to greet you now!

Ciao, ’til the next post~

It’s no longer the fashion statement to be round or square. What will we do for the ideal V shaped face that everybody craves and strives for?

I saw this on the retail shelf recently. Facial products to create a V shape face?? Do they really work? Well, no one knows.

Nonetheless, there are effective ways to slim the face and create the much desired V shape… and without surgery too. One of the methods is to combine jawline slimming by botulinum injection and chin filler injection.

The masseters are two bulky muscles on each side of the angle of your jaw. They serve as muscles of mastication, which means they help you chew. There are two other muscle groups that also perform this function, namely the temporalis muscles and the pterygoid muscles.

Especially in conditions of excessive chewing or grinding at night (known as bruxism), the masseters at the jawline can grow to quite a size, causing the jaws to look square or the face to look bigger, much like how body builders grow their abs and pects by training them. Relaxing the muscles by injecting Botox is effective in shrinking the jawline, thereby slimming the angle of the jaw.

Botox is injected into the masseters on each side of the face and spread out at multiple points within the muscle. The procedure is a not surgical and the facial slimming effect is seen anywhere between 2 to 8 weeks.

This is followed by improving the dimension of the face by chin augmentation with filler injection. Hyaluronic acid filler is a proteoglycan similar to what is also found in our skin, eyes and joints. It is highly reversible, either by dissolution or natural breakdown by the body over months, and has been found to be very safe for facial contouring. This filler material is injected into the chin to improve overall dimensions.

Possible side effects from the above procedure include a slight dull ache over the muscles, especially with chewing. This should be transient and resolve within a week. After filler injection, there may be some dull aching and slight bruising under the chin for a few days.

So who says you need surgery to have a slim V face? This method is highly effective and safe, with minimal pain too.

P.S. For more information about creating a V shape face, check out my clinic website at www.tiffinyyangclinic.com!

Yours truly is on the cover of Wellness No. 1 2013!

Wellness No. 1 is an English magazine focusing on health and wellness issues, published by the Chinese Newspaper Division of Singapore Press Holdings. It offers the best of both Western medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine. One of its unique features is its ability to bring together a panel of close to 50 Western doctors, TCM practitioners, pharmacists, nutritionists and other experts to share their knowledge and information to readers. It was officiated by Mr Khaw Boon Wan at the Paragon Atrium in Feb 2011 during the launch of the inaugural issue.

Since then, it has been selling like hotcakes, with the last issue being sold out within a month of its launch and all available copies sold out at the launch today.

During the launch, I received a beautiful souvenir of a framed Wellness No. 1 cover page from Mr Lim Jim Koon, the editor-in-chief of Chinese Newspapers.

This was the billboard onstage, showcasing the 2 sister health magazines launched today. One of it is the Chinese 健康第1 and the other is the English Wellness No. 1, which yours truly is on! The Chinese magazine features a pair of twins who are both doctors in their 40s– the elder sister, Dr Lim Ing Haan, is a cardiologist and the younger one, Dr Lim Ing Ruen, is a ENT surgeon.

Group photo with the handsome editors. What an honour!

The launch was held today with a mega health forum at the Raffles City Convention Centre at 9am today. There was a huge turnout queuing to subscribe to the sister magazines and booths set up by HPB, Watsons, etc. to promote health and well-being.

My sister went in the late afternoon but wasn’t able to get a copy anymore.

So check out the magazine stands soon and grab a copy for your reading pleasure!

P.S. Would like to thank SPH and all, especially the Chinese Newspaper Division, for this honour and wonderful opportunity. Wish you all great success in this amazing publication!
