Hermès and its one iconic bag – the Birkin. I spotted one on the show Jane by Design and thought it looked quite good, so I did some research on it.
Designed by Hermès chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas for the actress Jane Birkin in 1984, the price tag is easily a 5, even 6, digit figure (in whatever currency you’d like). They are extremely difficult to obtain due to unpredictable schedules and limited quantities… even though Jane Birkin stopped using it herself after a while.
I heard the wait list is very, very long– 2 to 3 years at least! If you called to enquire about it, the sales person on the other end would politely tell you that they do not discuss the Birkin over the phone. Out of curiosity, I went to enquire at Hermès on their waiting list for a Birkin but they informed me that it is closed for the time being because it was too long. Someone I knew (not very well) went all over Europe during his vacation to try to procure the much coveted bag… without success. Such elusivity.
It is indeed a highly coveted symbol of wealth… Or extreme extravagance.
Wow Tiffiny. U did your research well, same as what I heard. I heard that you got to walk into the shop and buy some items, then build some rapport with the boutique sales person in Paris.
If you managed to get into her good books, you will bypass the waiting list and get one when there happens to be stock in store!
That’s how my friend got his for someone. Haha!
Haha, your friend must be quite the charmer!
